After we finshed Patterns in Maths this month I had the kids create patterns on stockings and mittens.

Length - Inchworm and a Half

I got this wonderful idea from Nancy on firstgradeblog
http://firstgradewow.blogspot.ie/2013/05/inchworm-measurement.html

I have often used storybooks in English to introduce a new topic but never in Maths.
It worked a treat and the class were very excited to make their own inchworm.
We measured things in the classroom and then our school pe hall and downstairs corridor.
The kids loved checking if they were near their estimates.
By the time we started doing length in our Planet Maths books they had a good grasp on the topic.

I used a youtube video of this story to begin my lesson on length
